I've drawn caricatures for twenty years as part of my profession as a cartoonist. Typically I'm asked to draw people in a pleasant, smiling pose, which is fine, but by no means interesting. Partly because of this, and because of my personal rule to make all my caricatures complimentary no matter what, I rarely have any real fun drawing them.

I recently came across this photo of an old high school acquaintance of mine, who took a picture of herself in a mock expression of fury. Because of the wonderful, exaggerated expression, and because it was something I drew just to entertain myself, I had an absolute blast capturing that manic look. The best caricatures I draw are the ones I do for myself, typically without the knowledge of the subject. There's a freedom to it that's hard to describe, but it's pure creative bliss.

Of course, if this girl finds out I drew her as such, the expression might not be mock much longer...
