A sneak peek at one of the most important stories to Dead Duck's continuity, detailing his history with the Canadian Mafia, otherwise known as THE NOVA SCOTIA COSA NOSTRA!!! This brief preview makes up but a fraction of the stories that will fill my first Dead Duck graphic novel, published by Ape Entertainment and due out in stores in October of 2009!

The Scosh' (my nickname for them) have been knocking around in my imagination since the late 90's, and have featured in several projects of mine that never quite got off the ground. Now they've finally found the perfect niche in Dead Duck's world, and what a quirky combination they are!

With this story, I carefully walked the fence between satire and history. I love Canada with all my heart, and because it was never my intention to be insulting, I made sure that every joke made in this story was somehow tied to Canadian history, Canadian myth or Canadian geography, with lots and lots of careful research done on my part to assure accurate references were made. Granted, some liberties were taken here and there, but for the most part, I was careful to use the correct regional Indian names and follow the classic descriptions of Canadian folklore. And as you'll see when you finally get to read the full story, there's a fair amount of references to some of my favorite Canadian entertainment (Does Chum Blockwell look familiar to anyone? If his face doesn't ring a bell, the color of his clothes should be a dead giveaway).

I'm also quite proud of the coloring on this particular story. I have my own methods for coloring that, while perhaps not as polished and pristine as some more affluent users of Photoshop and related programs, suits my style just fine. And I really feel that with this story in particular I was able to suggest atmospherics quite well.

So hopefully this preview whets your appetite for the whole graphic novel, which as of this writing is just called 'DEAD DUCK.' If I can think of a clever subtitle between now and October of '09, you'll see it then. In the meantime, start saving your pennies, and clear room on your bookcase. Dead Duck and Zombie Chick will be skimming the pond very soon, and you are all on their list!

This was probably my favorite story in the book. Just one question: Those two guys at the end, they were based on John Candy and Martin Short, right? Sorry if that sounds dumb, but I'm of a generation that grew up without Ed Grimley.

I really appreciate hearing that you liked this story in Dead Duck! It was in my top three favorites as well, particularly because I love Canada so much. And you're very close on your guess of the two gangsters at the end of the story--they're actually based on Bob and Doug Mackenzie, the characters played by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. The characters were seen on SCTV (the Canadian comedy program that also featured Candy and Short) as well as my favorite comedy ever, "Strange Brew". Thanks again for letting me know that you enjoyed my comic!

I've never really seen much of Dave Thomas, so I went with my second guess. In my defense, he eally did look like a caricature of John Candy. Also, Rick Moranis was my second guess, if I could have remembered that he was Canadian. The only complaint I had with that story was more of a nitpick, as my inner horror nerd was spitting, "But Jason's mother was the killer in the original 1980 Friday the 13th!" I shut him up by reminding him it's all for a gag. My last word is a rising fear that somewhere out there, Nazi pornos actually exist.

I totally understand--I drew my caricature of Dave Thomas a little chunkier than he was in real life, which certainly put him more in the "John Candy" frame. I noticed it when the Dead Duck finally got printed, and was just one of a bunch of little things that I kinda winced at (most of the other stuff I fixed up a bit for when they, hopefully, reprint Dead Duck with another publisher one day). And I'm with you about Jason's mom. I too am a big horror nerd, and it's too often forgot that Mrs. Voorhees was the original killer. But you're right--for the sake of the gag, I had to simplify it a bit. Plus, I felt it was almost a bit of a stretch to have the Nova Scotia Cosa Nostra "whack" Jason for using hockey equipment to kill, since the only equipment Jason uses is the mask. But again, for the sake of the gag, it fit nicely, I thought!

Well, the gag worked, and it also had that nice joke about just how many unnecessary sequels these movies get. That's the explanation I would rather accept, that a reaper duck gave Jason a coupon for resurrection, and not the fact that the studios would rather rehash something than tray something new.

Ha! Thanks! I was happy to contribute that goofy idea to Jason Voorhees' mythology!
