I had a table at Wizard World Chicago in 2009, and among the pre-drawn sketches I had for sale were various members of Dick Tracy's rogues gallery (I'd been a fan of those misshapen villains since I was fifteen). A very nice fellow named Richard Pietrzyk came to my table and noticed those drawings right away. He told me he used to work on the Dick Tracy comic strip (as well as Brenda Starr), and also worked with The Chester Gould Dick Tracy Museum in Woodstock, Il [link] . I had a very nice conversation with Richard about all things Dick Tracy, and he bought a couple of my villain portraits, including Flattop, my personal favorite Tracy villain.
Jump ahead to last week. Out of the blue, I received a surprise package from Richard. On the neatest Dick Tracy stationary, Richard hand wrote me a very nice letter, and commissioned me to draw another Tracy villain to accompany Flattop--Crewy Lou. Crewy was never as popular as Flattop, Pruneface or The Brow, but being a fan, I immediately knew the character. And like Flattop, she was one of my favorite Tracy villains, certainly top amongst his femme fatales. So it sure felt like fate that I was asked to draw her for Richard!
I'll end this by saying how privileged I feel to be asked to draw so many popular characters that I love, for fans, and now, for those with personal associations with the characters!
For my part, while the "Classic" Tracy Villains are facinating...my personal favorite villians were "Spots" (whose unique cluster of dots floating before his face was a sort of Manga-style emote to suggest he's always looking about), "Mister Bribery" (wonderful, unique villain who's largely forgotten due to his connection to the Moon Maid storyline) and...Crewy Lou, who looked TOTAL PUNK long before Punk existed ;>)
Wow that is the best thing ever. You should really check out my group. I will be hopefully adding your work to it. If you uploaded the rest of your rogues that'd be greatly appreciated to. I hope you drew the man himself !
