A recent digital commission for :iconlila89: who asked me to draw Mickey, Donald and Goofy from their 1936 animated short, "Lonesome Ghosts". I took some liberties with this piece. Obviously it's filtered through my style, so it's intentionally not entirely on model. I also tweaked the weapons they're carrying--in the original cartoon, Mickey's carrying the shot gun, Goofy as an axe, and Donald has a net. I thought it would be funnier for Donald to have a board with nails in it, and Goofy to wield a chainsaw. A fun piece to create, with subject matter that i very rarely attempt. I'll probably color this sometime down the road.

Very nicely done! Great remdition to a classic Mickey, Donald & Goofy cartoon. Is it OK if I color this? Just for fun, not to upload on my own account.

Thanks for letting me! PS, how would you do that fading effect on the Ghost? Now as a solid color, but... you know. A faded green but still able to see the background's colors. Is it done in Photoshop or some other software?

I drew the ghost separately from the rest of the drawing. I scanned in both pieces of artwork, made the ghost a separate layer and put it on top of the other layer, selected and deleted any "white" outside the ghost's outline (I probably had to connect some of his lines so nothing inside him was selected), then brought the opacity down on ghost layer to have him just slightly translucent.

Should I do the same process for coloring him?

I suggest you just keep your colors for the ghost on a whole separate layer from the colors for everything else--on top of the other layers--and then bring down the opacity on the ghost color layer to give it a similar translucent quality.

OK, I think I'm starting to get it. Correct me if I'm wrong:

There should be four layers, one for the solid outline, one for the background, one for Mickey, Donald and Goofy and one final one for the ghost. Then I fade the ghost's layer back for the faded effect.

And should the layers be on normal, multiply or something else?

That sounds about right. There are a couple ways to go about doing it, but yours sounds solid. Good luck!

Love it. The designs are faithful to the Disney orignal while still bearing out your original style.

Seeing the chainsaw makes me think of one thing: :iconashplz::iconsaysplz: Goofy...!
