There's been a long, ever-growing list of male celebs I've wanted to caricature for awhile now, but they kept going to the back burner in favor of the challenges of making pretty actresses look cartoony. However, one day I forced myself to sit down and bring the dudes back to the forefront of my caricature portfolio. This was one of those dudes.
For the countless of you who are undoubtedly asking, "Paul Gia-whozitz???", first, go slap yourself, then go rent a movie based on the quality of acting rather than how hot the lead guy or girl is. Paul Giamatti is one of my three favorite actors, and has done countless films in the past ten years. He was Pig Vomit in "Private Parts", Miles in "Sideways," Inspector Uhl in "The Illusionist", Cleveland Heep in "Lady in the Water" and Limbo in Tim Burton's highly underrated remake of "Planet of the Apes." He's a great actor and deserves recognition by me, regardless of how many people recognize him in my portfolio.
Giamatti has the perfect face to caricature. He has huge bulbous frog eyes, a wide nose, a chubby pear-shaped head and an overbearing goatee which houses a small puckered mouth that grows enormous and loud when enraged (an emotion often seen in his face). I got this right on the first attempt. I think it's a good tribute to an actor I really respect. If you haven't already, go rent some of his movies. He's the real deal in the world of acting.
Sadly I usually don't have time to rent DVDs but I still love him anyways. Truth is I've only watched him in Big Fat Liar and in Man on the moon but already I knew he was one of these actors who look funny and can do brilliant funny but their full talent is in drama. I now have to watch these movies sometime. He comes up in my top three as equal to one or two... can't remember.
OH! I *have* to show this to my mom when she gets back in town. She loves him. And he's such a squat, sweet looking man. But he is an odd little pudgeball, as well. You captured him well. Especially with that expression.
(And, by the way, I thought Lady in the Water was underrated, along with Planet of the Apes. I really liked it. But no one I'm friends with seems to agree.)
Paul Giamatti is freaking awesome. I was laughing my butt off when he was on Saturday Night Live...
Not to mention his last name is fun to say with an Italian accent.
Not enough love for Paul Giamatti. I really fell in love with that guy after I saw Sideways and I've been a fan ever since. You really captured him, expecially his roundness in the face area. great job wih the eyes.
ohmygosh its him! its so uterly him you absolute genius! i feel like he is looking right at me! and its not even a photo, its like you got a little piece of his soul and mixed it in with your ink! BRILLIANT
Not all of Giamatti's movies have been great, but I still like the guy for some reason. Great job on the caricature - you got his eyes down just right.
