Like Paul Giamatti, Penn has been high on my to-do list of caricatures for some time, so when I sat down to render Paul, I tackled Sean as well. When I saw the trailer for "All The King's Men", I was overcome by the feeling that I could draw Penn. He's very iconic looking, after all. So I sat down and hammered out sketch after sketch, trying to get as close as possible just by drawing my from mind's eye (i.e. my sensory recollection of Penn rather than using photos). However, I began to feel like I needed to be more specific in my rendering and opted to find some source material to tap into. Just a couple photos gave me the clues I needed to draw the man in his most symbolic form: wild swept back hair graying at the temples, a scraggly little mustache and goatee and a look of seething contempt that was pure Penn. In the end, it only took a few rough sketches to reach what I consider an accomplishment in my caricaturing skills. And believe me, I hardly consider all my caricatures accomplishments. If that were the case, I wouldn't be re-drawing them so damn often.
Indeed, this IS Sean Penn. I've seen enough of his work to know that this is one of his most common expressions. Excellent job on the nose and forehead too.
Thanks! The arching hawk-like nose was the first thing that came to me when figuring out how to tackle this caricature. The Popeye-esque mouth was second!
